10-Yard Fight

Nintendo Entertainment System
1985
Released By: Nintendo

It feels a bit unfair to hate on 10-Yard Fight. Released in 1985, 10-Yard Fight was the NES' very first football title.  The game itself is based of an arcade title of the same name.  It is, however, hard for me to find alot of good things to say about this title.

The game looks like an Atari port, the graphics definately don't use up what the NES had to offer. They do, however, have a certain charm to them, and I don't hold the graphics against the title.  For 1985, the graphics arent that bad.  Very simple, red vs. blue uniform color scheme.  The player you are controlling will always be a light teal color, and the opponent with the ball will always wear a black uniform.  Its a nice touch that helps keep you focused on whats going on, and without the color
differences, it would be near impossible to identify the key players.

Just like us Americans...always chasin down the black man

Where this game really begins to fall apart is gameplay.  The whole thing plays like aquatic football.  The players are slow moving, and the controls are unpredictable and unresponsive.  There are very limited options.  Basically when you have the ball, you either pass it or run with it, and when you don't, you tackle the guy that does.  No play making here, and no way to control the AI on your team.  I use the AI term loosely, as its pretty damn stupid.  It seems like you where the only one intrested in playing football that day, everyone else came to pick flowers, run in circles, scratch their ass, ect.  At the higher difficulties, the AI on the opposing team simply cheats to win.  They run much faster, and will intercept any ball that comes anywhere near them.  The game is actually resonably difficult, but simply because your teammates are so stupid that they fail to be helpful at all.

This is what an interception looks like...no really..I swear

The sound is fucking awful.  Beeps and 3 different kinds of static is about all your ears will be treated to in this title.  Its barely even worth mentioning the sound.  I briefly turned it up to get a feel for it, and turned it back down.  If you are going to play this one, I would strongly recommend putting the TV volume on low.

Is this one worth buying?  I don't know that I can recommend this title to anyone aside from a collector or a hard core football fan.  Its worth emulating though, just so that you think twice about bitching about the new Madden games.  Bad sounds, bad controls, and AI that make the game no fun at all lowers the score on this classic to 3/10.

Final Score- 3/10
Good: Classic Graphics
Bad: Sound, Control, AI
